Just Equal is currently focusing its efforts on three issues of local and statewide importance:

• Working to improve Athens-Clarke County's protection against discrimination
• Addressing discrimination issues that affect teachers and students in Athens-Clarke County public schools
• Gathering information on workplace equality practices of some of the companies that do business in Athens. The ACC Corporate Equality Index 2006 was extracted from the 2006 Corporate Equality Index Scores compiled by the Human Rights Campaign (hrc.org/workplace)

What are the ACC nondiscrimination provisions?

Just Equal has identified four action areas to strengthen and expand Athens-Clarke County's current nondiscrimination provisions. Taken together, these actions would provide basic protections for all ACC citizens, gay and straight, and would help build stronger ties across diverse sectors of the community:

• Add sexual orientation and gender identity to ACC's existing nondiscrimination provisions regarding county employment [Note: The ACC Commission passed this proposal unanimously on June 6, 2006]
• Provide domestic partner benefits for county employees [Note: This proposal was passed by the Commission on December 5, 2006]
• Enact a general nondiscrimination ordinance that provides protection from discrimination in private employment, housing, and public accommodations
• Establish a legislatively authorized Community Relations Council for the purpose of community dialogue and education
