Johanna Kiehl: Special legislative session would be divisive soapbox

Thanks to the Athens Banner-Herald for the thoughtful commentary on the highly divisive political manipulations sprouting from the recent court ruling striking down an amendment to the state constitution prohibiting gay marriage (Editorial, "Gay marriage demagoguery just pointless," May 18).

A special legislative session to address what is already covered under current Georgia law is unnecessary. Thank you for calling the session what it is: a divisive $300,000 soapbox against something that is already illegal under Georgia law.

At a time when people in our communities, states and country want and need to feel a sense of unity, it's remarkable to see candidates and elected officials trying to divide us once again.
